Causal Entropic Forces
Wissner-Gross and Cameron Freer proposed a causal generalization of entropic forces and showed that it can spontaneously produce two defining behaviors of the human cognitive niche: tool use and social cooperation. The paper is a first step toward treating intelligence as a physical process rather than a software trick. The TED formulation that followed — ‘intelligence acts so as to maximize future freedom of action’ — is the sentence executives actually need. In a firm, future freedom of action is optionality: the ability to sense, reconfigure, and commit without being trapped by last year’s org chart. Agents that locally optimize tasks while collapsing the organism’s future option set are not intelligent in this physical sense. They are entropy accelerators wearing a productivity dashboard.
We explicitly propose a first step toward such a relationship in the form of a causal generalization of entropic forces that we find can cause two defining behaviors of the human “cognitive niche” — tool use and social cooperation — to spontaneously emerge.

Read against the system of work: coordination tax and decision lag are optionality killers. Every approval gate that exists because context cannot travel is a reduction in future freedom of action. Judgment infrastructure — who may collapse a superposition, who may not — is how a firm keeps its cognitive niche from being automated into a narrower future.
