AI is changing the value of tasks and shifting constraints.
When a model can do the task, the task is no longer where the premium sits. Value moves to remaining constraints — judgment, coordination, risk, and the network that carries them. Knowledge workers stay above the algorithm by working with AI; what remains scarce is judgment first, then creativity and purpose.
Sangeet Paul Choudary: AI is a coordination mechanism, not merely a faster intern. The shipping container did not win by being faster; it won by letting ships, trucks, and trains compose without consensus. Knowledge work is being containerized. Jobs unbundle, then rebundle around judgment, orchestration, and risk. Stay above the algorithm: use AI, and what remains scarce is judgment first — then creativity and purpose. Those do not get cheaper as the model does.
A Networked Organization has to emerge from that Network-First Future of Work. The Network-First Manifesto is blunt: the most valuable asset in the AI era is not just intelligence, it is connection. Formal hierarchy still provides structure, clarity, and accountability — and it is the right form in chaos and urgency. Informal networks, built on trust, are how work actually moves. This is not a call to go flat. The org chart is not the only map.
Salim Ismail’s Exponential Age is already an operating-system problem. The Organizational Singularity (ExO 3.0, a navigable OpenExO bookapp) encodes purpose as protocol and runs an Intelligence Stack. The model arrives working. The organization does not. That is not a flattening program.
That is why treating the organization as a complex adaptive system — Prof. Clayton F. Williams’ strategic organism — is critical, not optional. A machine-oriented firm can look like the machines AI appears to be: linear, programmable, swap the part. It is not. Humans are still inside it — judgment, creativity, purpose, the informal networks that actually move work — colliding with massive systems change. That combination is what makes the emerging system of work a complex system. In the Complex domain, governing constraints fail because causality is obvious only in hindsight. Strategy is what the organism keeps doing under entropy. The 18 laws still apply.
AI is not a tool of automation. It is a mechanism for coordination.
The most valuable asset in the AI era isn’t just intelligence, it’s connection.
In a world where AI can replicate skills and knowledge, what sets individuals apart is their network, the strength, diversity, and credibility of their relationships.
Formal hierarchy provides structure, clarity, and accountability. It ensures alignment and coordinated action. Informal networks, though often invisible, are built on trust and personal relationships. They influence how daily decisions are made, how ideas spread, and how work truly gets done.
It is how intelligent systems thrive under selective pressure. It is how organisations assert coherence against entropy.
